DID YOU KNOW
Did you know that according to experts, music trends in 2018 includes hip-hop, music streaming, and live concerts? To back this up, Drake, an artist rooted in hip-hop, came out as the most popular musician in the United States in 2017. Music as part of our daily lives is deeply rooted in the cultural diaspora we are and in 2016, the music industry has redeemed itself from its lumbering growth in the previous years. According to an article published on Rolling Stone, the industry has hit revenue of 7.7 billion US dollars in 2016—the highest gross since 2009. The drastic growth can be attributed to the growing popularity of various paid streaming platforms, live events, social media channels, and the easy access to music production tools, especially software have replaced the major music distribution channels of yesteryear. This is despite the rise of other sources, specifically music torrenting sites. 2018 music technology puts Spotify on the top trend with its remarkable growth over the past few years amidst the 1.6 billion copyright lawsuit it's facing while SoundCloud remains to struggle to maintain its place in the industry despite laying off 40% of its workforce and shutting down offices in London and San Francisco. While streaming is slowly reaching its prosperity, sales of compact disc continue to slow down with only 99.4 million physical albums sold in 2016—the lowest number since 1986. Nevertheless, the music revenue worldwide is projected to reach 57 billion US dollars by 2021, according to Statista.

English rock band Coldplay has released seven studio albums, eight live albums, six compilation albums, three video albums, 15 extended plays, 46 singles, four promotional singles, and 47 music videos. The band has sold over 100 million records—over 75 million album sales worldwide.[1] In addition, they have achieved five million-selling singles in the United Kingdom,[2] and sold 18.2 million albums and 33.6 million song downloads in the United States.[3]
Coldplay released their debut studio album Parachutes on 10 July 2000. It was a commercial success, peaking at number one in the United Kingdom and performing well internationally.[4] The album was certified nine times platinum by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) and has sold over 8.5 million copies worldwide.[5][6]Parachutes spawned four singles; 'Yellow' and 'Trouble' became top ten hits in the UK, while 'Shiver' and 'Don't Panic' were moderately successful.[7] The band's second studio album, A Rush of Blood to the Head, was released on 26 August 2002. The album experienced exceptionally strong sales in comparison to its predecessor, topping the charts in the UK and in many other countries, including Australia and Canada.[4][8][9] The band spent 18 months promoting and touring behind the album. Its lead single, 'In My Place', peaked at number two in the UK and charted highly in several other countries.[7] 'The Scientist' and 'Clocks', the album's next two singles, became top ten hits in the UK; the latter single peaked at number 29 on the United States Billboard Hot 100, giving the band their first top 40 hit on the chart.[7][10]
Coldplay's third studio album, X&Y, was released on 6 June 2005. Topping the charts in numerous countries, including the UK and the US, the album was a commercial success.[4][11]X&Y went on to become the best-selling album of 2005, selling over 8.3 million copies by the end of the year.[12] Six singles were released from X&Y. The album's lead single 'Speed of Sound' peaked at number two in the UK and became an international top ten hit.[7] Three of its subsequent singles, 'Fix You', 'Talk' and 'The Hardest Part', were also commercially successful. Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, the band's fourth studio album, was released on 12 June 2008. It topped the charts in over thirty-six countries and became the best-selling album of 2008.[13][14] Within the first three days of the album's release, it sold over 302,000 copies. 'Viva la Vida', the album's second single, became an international hit and topped the charts in countries such as the UK, the Netherlands and the US.[7][10][15]
Mylo Xyloto was released as the band's fifth studio album on 24 October 2011. It followed in the success of its predecessors, becoming a worldwide chart-topper. The album's first two singles, 'Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall' and 'Paradise', charted highly in several countries, the latter becoming the band's second number-one single in the United Kingdom.[7] The album produced an additional five singles: 'Charlie Brown', 'Princess of China', 'Up with the Birds', 'Hurts Like Heaven' and 'Up in Flames'. Preceded by the release of the singles 'Magic', 'Midnight' and 'A Sky Full of Stars', the band's sixth studio album Ghost Stories was released on 19 May 2014 and went straight to number one in over fifteen countries. The group's seventh studio album A Head Full of Dreams was released on 4 December 2015, marking the shortest gap between two album releases by the band, and reached the top two in numerous countries upon release, later resurging in sales after their performance at Super Bowl 50 and eventually reaching sales of six million copies worldwide.[16]
